Design & Materials Newsletter / Blog

In this section of the website, we regularly post interesting items of news and updates from the Self-Build Industry. Examples include the latest amendments to the Planning System, design trends, materials innovations, changes to the Building Regulations and lots of tips and advice on building your own home. Since September 2016 we have been following the Self Build Journey of two of our clients.

December 2016

Warwick and Lynn Wilson

Last time Warwick and Lynn talked about how Beverley was able to create a second design proposal that provided them with a layout and visual appearance that still ticked all the boxes.

“I have been in this position many times in the past where what the clients initially wanted was not what the planners were looking for. With my experience of these situations I was able to create a design which gave the clients everything they were looking for and that would be supported by the planners”, says Beverley our Head of Design.

Below left is an illustration of Beverley’s first design proposal for a dwelling that echoes the Edwardian period however the planners were against a full 2 storey building. Below right is her second proposal for a cottage/rural style that was fully supported by the planners.

Next time: Tendering the work – fixing the cost of the build.
